I am kicking off the Foreign Language Film Challenge with non other than The Triplets of Belleville directed by Sylvain Chomet of France. I saw this film not too long after is release date in 2003 after hearing about the Oscar buzz surrounding it, so it's not the first time I've seen it. However, being 11/12 years old and not a film graduate, I figured I'd revisit it to refresh my memory and to see if there was anything new I would pick up.
Coming from more from a music background than animation, this opening number is everything. It is the strongest scene that has remained in my brain since the first time watching. The song aside, I appreciated how different animation techniques were used to show different times in history throughout the film. The characters are very quirky, grotesque, and overly exaggerated (ahem, nose-goes), making for a few chuckles.
My biggest question was why there was so much focus on the dog barking at the passing train.. perhaps it paralleled the biker son's action of repetition, was making a comment on animal instinct/nature.. but the slowed down shots, and then the dogs dreams.. What do you think?
Overall, it's a very charming film with impressive animation, a sweet message of how far one is willing to go for a loved one, and the music will have you bopping in your seat- guaranteed.
